Why do nightmares happen?

Stress, Anxiety & Covid

High levels of stress or anxiety, whether related to daily life challenges, traumatic events, or underlying mental health conditions, can trigger nightmares.

Research has also shown that those suffering from both Covid and Long Covid can experience increased frequency of distressing dreams and nightmares.

Trauma & PTSD

Individuals who have experienced trauma, such as physical or emotional abuse, accidents, or witnessing disturbing events, may develop nightmares as a manifestation of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Nightmares in these cases often involve re-experiencing traumatic events and can significantly impact sleep quality and overall well-being.

Medication & Substance Abuse

Additionally, substance use, including alcohol, recreational drugs, and even caffeine, can disrupt sleep cycles and contribute to the occurrence of nightmares.

Medication & Substance Abuse
Certain medications, particularly those that affect neurotransmitter levels, may increase the likelihood of experiencing nightmares as a side effect.

Additionally, substance use, including alcohol, recreational drugs, and even caffeine, can disrupt sleep cycles and contribute to the occurrence of nightmares.

What impact is this having on your life?

Sleep Disturbances

Nightmares can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to frequent awakenings during the night. This can result in poor sleep quality and daytime fatigue, impairing overall functioning.

Increased Stress and Anxiety

Experiencing distressing nightmares can heighten levels of stress and anxiety, both during sleep and upon waking. Persistent nightmares may contribute to the development or exacerbation of anxiety disorders.

Mood Disturbances

Nightmares can elicit intense emotional responses such as fear, sadness, or anger, which may linger upon awakening and throughout the day. This can negatively impact mood and emotional well-being.

Impaired Cognitive Functioning

Chronic nightmares may impair cognitive functioning, including concentration, memory, and problem-solving abilities. This can interfere with daily tasks and responsibilities.

Psychological Distress

Individuals who experience frequent nightmares may avoid certain activities or environments associated with triggering their nightmares, leading to social withdrawal and a reduced quality of life.

Disruption of Daily Activities

Individuals who experience frequent nightmares may avoid certain activities or environments associated with triggering their nightmares, leading to social withdrawal and a reduced quality of life.

Increased Risk of Mental Health Disorders

Persistent nightmares are associated with an increased risk of mental health disorders, including anxiety disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Physical Health Consequences

Chronic sleep disturbances due to nightmares can have negative consequences on physical health, including weakened immune function, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and impaired metabolism.

Impact on Relationships

Nightmares can affect interpersonal relationships, as the distress caused by frequent nightmares may strain relationships with partners, family members, and friends.

Elevated Risk of Serious Mental Illness

In severe cases, persistent nightmares can contribute to feelings of hopelessness and despair, elevating the risk of serious mental illness including suicidal ideation or behaviours. The distress caused by recurrent nightmares, particularly those associated with traumatic events or mental health conditions like PTSD, can exacerbate existing psychological vulnerabilities. Therefore, seeking timely support and intervention from mental health professionals is crucial to address underlying issues and mitigate potential risks.

The Dream Completion Technique® with clients

Success After Years

“I’m a therapist and some of my clients bring nightmares. I’ve lacked confidence working with nightmares, aware of how little years of my own therapy helped with them. But after trying your technique myself and benefitting from it, I feel like I now have a reliable tool for helping clients who are also struggling with this. This email is sounding a bit like a paid advertisement! It’s just such an effective technique.”

The Wizard of Dreams

“I continue to use your Dream Completion Technique with reported success. It was only last week I thought of emailing you when a client of mine called me a wizard after I supported her to come up with a new dream ending that really felt good on a gut level. And hey presto, no further nightmares/anxious dreams reported.”

The Lava Monster

“I assessed a young boy last week who has awful sleep terrors and never slept alone his whole life (aged 9) now and his parents were at their wits end. I did Dream Completion with him and he slept alone for 12 hours that night! Has been in own room ever since with lava monster to help with the bad dreams.”

Bereavement

“I work with bereaved parents and wanted to pass on the thanks of a mother I’ve worked with whose husband wouldn’t attend therapy but had been having nightmares and night terrors since their baby twins died. I explained the technique to my client and gave the YouTube link to your video. She supported her husband to work through the technique and it has worked literally overnight.”

Military Trauma

“I used this technique to work with nightmares in the military, it worked with teenagers, and with civilians. In total, I tried it with 15 people who had nightmares and recurring unpleasant dreams. The result exceeded all my expectations and made these people happier. Right at the session, people are filled with faith and strength in overcoming unpleasant dreams, and when we found their version of ending the dream, there was a breakthrough and a lot of pleasure.”

Marshmallow Crocodiles Defeated!

“I have been working with a 9-year old girl. She has some issues around school, and has recurring nightmares. Even though she is quite young she enjoyed your video and she did some drawings of how she wanted her dream to go – and popped them under her pillow. She wanted me to let you know that marshmallow crocodiles are not as scary as the ones she has been dreaming about for the last few years – and she would like to thank you very much”

A Simple Thank You

“Thank you for such a useful and simple technique. To be able to empower people to heal themselves is truly humbling.”

The Ukraine War

“Good day! My name is Myroslava Hasyuk, I am the head of the Department of Clinical and Rehabilitation Psychology of the Precarpathian National University. During the last year, I have been rehabilitating women who lost husbands and sons in the war in Ukraine. I use Dream Completion to stop nightmares and I want to note the effectiveness of the techniques even in severe cases of loss. Thank you.”

Peaceful sleep

“I worked with a retired prison officer and he stopped having nightmares using Dream Completion. This was so important for him as he was at the end of life and died a few weeks after therapy completed. He had peaceful sleep for the weeks he had left. Thank you.”

A wide range of issues

“I’m loving using this technique with a wide range of presentations, from PTSD to generalised anxiety. It is so effective and clients love that it gives them power and more control. Thank you.”

Don’t just take the experts’ word for it.

This is what people who have used The Dream Completion Technique® have to say.

Myth Busting

“I’m the only person going through this”

More people suffer from nightmares than it might seem at first glance. In fact, it’s likely that everyone knows someone who experiences nightmares and sleep disturbance regularly. Nightmares can affect individuals of all ages, causing significant distress and impacting their overall wellbeing. Despite their common occurrence, many people hesitate to discuss their experiences, leading to a misconception about how widespread the problem truly is. The The Dream Completion Technique® breaks this taboo of silence and provides a solution for everybody to return to peaceful sleep.

“It’s something I need to learn to live with”

Nightmares can be effectively treated, yet few people ever seek help for them. Despite the methods people use to cope with the effects of nightmares, most endure the distressing impact of nightmares in silence. This hesitation to look for help often stems from the belief that nightmares are simply a part of life to be endured along with a lack of awareness about treatment options. By understanding that nightmares are treatable through using The Dream Completion Technique®, more people can improve their sleep and overall quality of life.

“Any treatment would be invasive and complicated”

Treating nightmares can be simple and easily accessible, not requiring invasive procedures, complicated regimes or medication. The most effective treatment is The Dream Completion Technique®, which provides a clear explanation for why your nightmares are occuring, and specific guidance on how to stop them. This non-invasive approach can significantly reduce the frequency and intensity of nightmares, making peaceful sleep an attainable goal for all. By understanding this accessible option, individuals can find relief without the need for complex or medical interventions.

“This will be a long process”

The Dream Completion Technique® can resolve nightmares in as little as one night (Yes, reallly!!). This method, which is clearly taught through a series of engaging videos and a workbook, often delivers rapid results. Many individuals experience a significant reduction in both the frequency and intensity of their nightmares almost immediately. By using this simple and effective technique, you can achieve peaceful sleep and improved wellbeing without prolonged or complex treatments.

Nightmares can ruin your life

FAQs

What evidence is there that this works?

There is plenty of good evidence that The Dream Completion Technique® is effective in resolving nightmares and sleep disturbance, even for those with PTSD. The concepts behind this technique have been extensively researched over nearly 50 years with many supporting scientific papers.

Dr Havens has completed his own PhD research resulting in published evidence, going on to create The Dream Completion Technique® which incorporates all of the most effective elements into a truly bespoke programme. Further research is currently being conducted in an NHS Talking Therapies service (2022-2025) in conjunction with Swansea University.

In addition, thousands of therapists have been trained by Dr Havens and are using this technique with their clients to great success!

What makes this programme unique?

Other approaches to stopping nightmares can only be applied to fixed and recurring nightmares, don't explain why nightmares happen nor provide explicit guidance on how to stop them.

The Dream Completion Technique® was developed to specifically address these issues and is the most comprehensive treatment in the world for all types of nightmares, even when there is no dream recall.

Isn’t this just nightmare rescripting?

Nightmare rescripting and Image Rehearsal Therapy have been around for many years, but don’t provide any explanation of why nightmares occur, or provide guidance on what rescripts are most likely to work.  They also require exposure to nightmare content, and are a bit like ‘shooting in the dark’ when it comes to fixing your nightmares.

The Dream Completion Technique® was created to address all of these issues and provides the most effective technique for resolving all types of nightmares and sleep disturbances in the fastest and safest way.

Is this programme suitable for children?

Yes, parents can purchase this programme and teach the basic ideas to their children, who are usually surprisingly creative with their new dream ideas! There is also a very good childrens’ book called ‘The Dream Director’ available from online booksellers.

Can I buy this programme for someone else?

Yes, ensure that you include their email as the destination for your product on the checkout page.

What methods of payment do you accept?

Secure Online card payment can be made using Stripe or PayPal.  Your data is secure and no payment data is retained.

How does the 30-day money back guarantee work?

Although you have been granted lifetime access to this programme, a refund is available if after 30 days you are dissatisfied with the results.  In order to qualify for the refund, which will only be granted after 30 days, you will need to evidence 3 different new dream ideas that you tried over the course of the 30 days.

However, please remember that this technique will always work if you follow the process carefully and don’t give up.  There is always a solution to unlock peaceful sleep, although this may require the help of a partner or friend to help you find the dream idea that works for you.

You might also find it helpful to rewatch video 5 where Alan demonstrates the importance of not giving up.

Can I get a refund?

We hope that you will be completely satisifed with your purchase and that you will be successful in stopping your nightmares and sleep disturbance.

Refunds are only provided according to the terms of the previous FAQ (How does the 30-day money back guarantee work?)  but if you feel you have any further justification for asking for one, please contact help@stopnightmares.org

Is this therapy?

No, the Dream Completion Technique® is a behavioral skill and therapeutic intervention, but does not constitute therapy.

Are there any risks in doing this?

There have been no negative experiences or outcomes reported from the mulitple research trials and the thousands of therapists using this technique.

The worst thing that could happen is that there is no change to your nightmares, which is a prompt that your new dream idea is not strong enough and needs reconsidering
